Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a power conditioner and battery backup?

A power conditioner improves the quality of available utility power by addressing electrical noise, transients, common-mode voltage and some surge energy. A UPS adds stored battery energy so the load can continue operating during an outage. Conditioning does not provide outage runtime.

Do Powervar UPS systems also condition power?

Yes. Powervar UPM and UPS families provide power-quality protection as well as backup, but the exact topology varies. Security II combines line-interactive operation with a low-impedance isolation transformer, while Security Plus II uses online double conversion and an isolation transformer.

When should I specify line-interactive versus online UPS?

Line-interactive equipment can fit many distributed loads where voltage regulation, isolation and short transfer time are appropriate. Online double-conversion systems continuously regenerate the output and are often selected for especially sensitive or mission-critical loads.

Are surge suppressors the same as power conditioners?

No. A basic surge suppressor primarily limits transient overvoltage. Powervar conditioners combine surge diversion with an isolation transformer and power-line filtering, and some families also filter the safety-ground circuit.
